學習障礙的孩子一般說來智力正常，但是因為腦神經中某種學習功能的異常，使他們在聽、說、讀、寫、算上遭遇一項或多項的困難，這些困難會導致他們在學校的學習產生問題。
因為學習障礙的孩子外表和一般的孩子完全一樣，家長和老師大多會將孩子的困難歸因於懶惰不用心、不聽話。雖然學習障礙是終生伴隨的障礙，但是只要經過適當、有效的教育
，學習障礙者還是可以發揮其蘊藏在障礙下的潛力。
